In short, a cookie is a small text file that is placed on your computer or mobile device to help ensure that you get the best possible experience when you visit a website. Cookies are widely used by website owners in order to make their websites work, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide reporting information.
Cookies set by the site owner (in this case, Egencia) are called „first party cookies“. Cookies set by parties other than the site owner are called „third party cookies“. Third party cookies enable third party features or functionality to be provided on or through the Site (e.g. like advertising, interactive content and analytics). The parties that set these third party cookies can recognise your Device both when it visits the Site in question and also when it visits certain other Sites.
We use first party and third party cookies for several reasons. Cookies allow us to improve the Site’s content, functionality and speed, while their tracking ability also helps us to understand your likes and dislikes, which means we can respond quickly and adapt the site accordingly and we refer to these as „essential“ or „strictly necessary“ cookies. Third parties serve cookies through our Sites for advertising, analytics and other purposes. This is described in more detail below.
Cookies also allow us to highlight what destinations that visitors like you are also interested in. Once we know that, we can show you who’s booking what and where – what’s hot and what’s not in terms of deals and destinations.
The specific types of first and third party cookies served through our Sites and the purposes they perform are described below (please note that the specific cookies served may vary depending on the specific Egencia Site you visit):
Essential Site cookies: These cookies are strictly necessary to provide you with services available through our Sites and to use some of its features, allowing you to access to secure areas such as your customer account pages and to use great features like our shopping basket. Without these cookies, our Site would not work properly, and you would not be able to use features such as the shopping basket or the secure customer account pages.
Session and persistent cookies: As with most Sites, we also use ’session cookies‘, which exist only for the length of time that you visit our site and are deleted once you close your browser, along with ‚permanent cookies‘ also known as ‚persistent cookies‘ which remain stored on your browser ready for use the next time you visit our Site. This enables Sites to recognise your device when you later re-open your browser to give you as smooth a browsing experience as possible.
Performance cookies: These cookies are used to enhance the performance of our Sites but are non-essential to their use. These cookies cannot identify you personally; rather they provide us with anonymous information to help us understand which parts of our Site interest our visitors and if they experience any errors. We use these cookies to test different designs and features for our Site, and we also use them to help us monitor how our visitors reach our sites and the effectiveness of our advertising.
Functionality cookies: These cookies help us understand how our Site is being used and how we can improve your experience on it. Some of these cookies may be essential if you want to view videos and maps on our site. We may also use „Flash cookies“ for some of our animated content and to remember some of your preferences such as your volume settings. These cookies cannot identify you personally; rather they provide us with anonymous information to help us understand which parts of our Site interest our visitors and if they experience any errors. We use these cookies to test different designs and features for our Site and we also use them to help us monitor how our visitors reach our sites and how effective our advertising is.
Analytics and customisation cookies: These cookies collect information that is used either in aggregate form to help us understand how our Sites are being used by our visitors or how effective are marketing campaigns are, or to help us customise our Sites for you and make the content you see as relevant as possible.
Advertising cookies: These cookies are used to make advertising messages more relevant to you. They perform functions like preventing the same ad from continuously reappearing, ensuring that ads are properly displayed for advertisers, and in some cases selecting advertisements that are based on your interests.
Social networking cookies: These cookies are used to enable you to share pages and content that you find interesting on our Sites through third party social networking and other Sites. These cookies may also be used for advertising purposes too.
We hope you’re now feeling confident about what cookies can do, and how we use them at Egencia to improve your Site experience, but we know that you may want to manage your cookies from time to time so here are some tips…

- Most advertising networks offer you a way to opt out of targeted and online behavioural advertising. If you’d like to find out more information on how to opt out, visit:
Cookies are not the only way to recognise or track visitors to a Site. We may use other, similar technologies from time to time, like web beacons (sometimes called „tracking pixels“ or „clear gifs“). These are tiny graphics files that contain a unique identifier that enable us to recognise when someone has visited our Sites or the files viewed on our site. This allows us, for example, to monitor the traffic patterns of users from one page within our Sites to another, to deliver or communicate with cookies, to understand whether you have come to our Sites from an online advertisement displayed on a third-party Site, to improve site performance, and to measure the success of e-mail marketing campaigns. In many instances, these technologies are reliant on cookies to function properly, and so declining cookies will impair their functioning.
Third parties may serve cookies on your Device to serve advertising through our Sites. These companies may use information about your visits to this and other Sites in order to provide relevant advertisements about goods and services that you may be interested in. They may also employ technology that is used to measure the effectiveness of advertisements. This can be accomplished by them using cookies or web beacons to collect information about your visits to this and other sites in order to provide relevant advertisements about goods and services of potential interest to you. The information collected through this process does not enable us or them to identify your name, contact details or other personally identifying details unless you choose to provide these.
Egencia adheres to the European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance (“EDAA”) Principles. For more information about the EDAA, you can visit the EDAA Site. If you wish to make a query or complaint about our use of online behavioural advertising cookies, please use the details listed in the “How to contact us” section below.
Expedia does not process sensitive personal data for the online behavioural advertising purposes. We do not target anyone under the age of 16 on our Site in general, nor for online behavioural advertising purposes.
